January Foodie Pen Pals

It’s been a while, but foodie pen pals is back for the month of January! This month I was sent a box by Candice (no blog) from Kansas City – and boy did she deliver some great local goods!

This gorgeous notecard greeted me when I opened the box. The flowers and butterfly are actually raised from the card. Seriously, this thing was beautiful.

Inside were some delicious KC treats.

BBQ sauce, of course, and a Tuscan salad dressing from a local restaurant. I haven’t opened either of them quite yet – trying to use some open condiments first – but I cannot wait to try them out.

Next up is some locally packaged taco seasoning, which we will most definitely use. Taco night is a yummy one around here. And, of course, coffee. When Candice asked in her e-mail if I liked coffee, I responded with all caps and exclamation points. I think I’d drink it all day long if I could. I can’t wait to try this Kansas City blend from the Roasterie.

And some delicious sweets. I’d actually heard of Valomilk before, probably on one of those random Food Network shows that features some sort of regional delicacy on each episode. Anyway, it’s milk chocolate filled with marshmallow. There’s no way anything can be wrong with that. It was a bit smushed from it’s journey but still tasted really, really good. The milk chocolate was delicious – much better than plain old Hershey’s

And the Cherry Mash. Yeah, the name sounds weird and maybe a little gross. Also, totally retro and delicious. It’s milk chocolate and peanuts filled with cherry – kind of like those Russell Stover or Fannie May chocolates but somehow much better. It’s the kind of thing I’d never think to try but was really good.

Pretty great month, I’d say!

And now it’s time for some details about Foodie Penpals.  In case you’re a new reader, here’s a reminder of what the program is all about:

-On the 5th of every month, you will receive your penpal pairing via email. It will be your responsibility to contact your penpal and get their mailing address and any other information you might need like allergies or dietary restrictions.
-You will have until the 15th of the month to put your box of goodies in the mail. On the last day of the month, you will post about the goodies you received from your penpal!
-The boxes are to be filled with fun foodie things, local food items or even homemade treats! The spending limit is $15. The box must also include something written. This can be anything from a note explaining what’s in the box, to a fun recipe…use your imagination!
-You are responsible for figuring out the best way to ship your items depending on their size and how fragile they are. (Don’t forget about flat rate boxes!)
-Foodie Penpals is open to blog readers as well as bloggers. If you’re a reader and you get paired with a blogger, you are to write a short guest post for your penpal to post on their blog about what you received. If two readers are paired together, neither needs to worry about writing a post for that month.
-Foodie Penpals is open to US, Canadian & European residents.  Please note, Canadian Residents will be paired with other Canadians only. Same with Europeans. We’ve determined things might get too slow and backed up if we’re trying to send foods through customs across the border from US to Canada and vice versa.

See you next month!

September Foodie Pen Pal

It’s that time again – foodie pen pal reveal day!

The Lean Green Bean

This month I received some awesome treats from Pam at Scrumptious Bento.

First off, I loved opening it up to see the pink polka dot tissue paper! So cheery and bright.

Inside the box was: 2 Clif Bars (Crunchy Peanut Butter & Peanut Toffee Buzz), Nori Maki Arare (rice crackers with seaweed), SunRype 100% fruit mini bites, Blue Diamond Baked Nut Chips, Agave Nectar, Nature’s Harvest Maui Wowi trail mix, and a recipe for Sweet’n’Spicy Nuts (which uses the agave nectar).

The fruit bites were gone within a couple days – they were awesome. I love fruit snacks and actually don’t ever buy them because they are a total binge food for me. These were so full of flavor that the 1/4 cup serving was enough!

The Blue Diamond chips were also really good. They’re the type of product I’ll see on the shelf but won’t because I don’t know if they’ll be good for the price. I had these with hummus and it was a great pairing. They also filled me up, and kept me full, much longer than “regular” chips.

I can’t wait to make the recipe she sent that uses the agave nectar. It’s a new-to-me ingredient which is always exciting.

So, another exciting (and delicious) month of Foodie Pen Pals!

I sent a box to Sarah of The Backpack Bees this month as well. Go check out the goodies!

August Foodie Pen Pal Reveal!

Hey hey!

Life has been just a teensy bit crazy the last few weeks. The school year is in full swing and we’re 10 days in. I actually have nearly lost my voice since I am so unused to talking all day every day! Hopefully the three-day weekend will bring some healing for me. I hope.

Enough rambling. It’s Foodie Pen Pal reveal day!

This is my second month participating (see July’s here) and I still can’t get over how neat it is.

This month I received a box form Heather at Yummy Sushi PJs.

It arrived pretty early in the month (before the “must send” date!) and I was pleasantly surprised to find a package outside my door when I got home from work.

Looks yummy…

A few new-to-me bars, Unreal peanut butter cups and some honey roasted cashews – my favorite nuts!

Lots of tea! I love tea, especially in the fall and winter. I have tons in my cabinet but I’m always looking for new blends to try.

I also sent a box to Mary at The JMB Family this month.

July Foodie Pen Pals Reveal Day

It’s finally reveal day!

The Lean Green Bean

After reading about Foodie Pen Pals on several blogs for a while, I decided it was time to join in on the fun myself.

I was selected to send a box of treats to Samantha from Losing My Weight, Gaining My Life, and I received a box from Amanda (no blog).

In the box was:

a picture of the Farmers Market logo where everything came from

peanut butter brownie from a local bakery (and directions to eat it soon. I did.)

pita chips

raspberry jam <—so good

rosemary and sea salt almonds that are so amazing I’ve been rationing them

and a lovely handwritten note!

I loved having someone else pick out some new goodies to try, and they were things or flavors that I wouldn’t normally pick for myself but were delicious. Thanks Amanda!

Go visit Sam to find out what I sent!
